Geriatric Physical Therapy: A New Season of Excitement, Clinical Skills Application, and Opportunities

11:00 AM • Level 2 • Ensemble Ballrooms A,B,C,D

Our older adult population is not getting any smaller, and the demand for highly skilled geriatric clinicians in all health professions is growing and not meeting such demand. This was clearly identified in the old, but accurate, 2008 IOM report, “Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce”. Those in academia, research, and clinical practice have blessed us over the past decades with volumes of evidence validating our practice. This lecture will promote thought, discuss theory and mechanisms to proactively touch more patients’ lives, and advance our profession by accelerating the evidence and allowing our “rubber to hit the road.” This is all very good news, but what can we do better to make our good work well known? Should we be a little more confident and aggressive in our approach to the marketplace? Additionally, misunderstandings of billing practices and audit scrutiny may suppress clinically appropriate dosage. The discussion will surround how we can package and exponentially promote such good news to the medical community, health plans, caregivers, and patients. Essentially, the stage has been set. Now, we have to execute as the go-to experts in the management of chronic conditions within the post-acute continuum of care.
